How to Use Montessori Alphabet Objects for Initial Sound Work

The set is not presented to the child all at once. The teacher selects a small number of letter cards and the corresponding objects, choosing sounds the child is ready to work with. The child names each object, listens carefully for its initial sound, and matches it to the appropriate letter card. The teacher uses the phonetic sound—/m/ rather than the letter name “em” - so the child builds a clear connection between the spoken sound and its written symbol. As confidence grows, new letters and objects are introduced, and the child can sort objects by their initial sounds or find an object for a given letter.
