Initial Sound & Letter Matching Board
This hands-on language material allows the child to match lowercase letters to uppercase letters, connect pictures to their initial sounds, and strengthen fine motor skills through precise work with wooden tweezers.
The material integrates three essential early literacy skills in one structured activity: lowercase-uppercase correspondence, sound-symbol association, and phonemic awareness. Through concrete, tactile work, the child builds a clear understanding of how spoken language connects to written symbols.
These follow-up activities are introduced after the child has already practiced letter recognition and initial sounds separately.
What’s Included
- Wooden alphabet board with engraved uppercase letters
- 26 double-sided wooden tokens:
- lowercase letter on one side
- picture representing the initial sound on the other side
- Wooden tweezers for fine motor development
Activities
1. Lowercase–Uppercase Matching
With the lowercase letter side of the token facing up, the child matches each token to the corresponding engraved uppercase letter on the board. This reinforces recognition of different letter forms and helps the child understand that lowercase and uppercase letters represent the same sound.
2. Initial Sound Work
With the picture side facing up, each token represents the initial sound of a word. The child names the object, isolates the beginning sound, identifies the matching lowercase letter, and places the token on the corresponding uppercase space on the board. This strengthens phonemic awareness and sound-symbol association.
3. Fine Motor Integration
Using the wooden tweezers, the child carefully picks up and places each token on the board. This refines pincer grasp, hand-eye coordination, and preparation for writing.
