Introduction to Decimal Quantity

Introduction to Decimal Quantity Montessori Material introduces children to the decimal system and the quantities of 1, 10, 100, and 1000.

The set includes:

  • 1 single bead – represents one unit (a point)
  • 1 bar of 10 beads – represents one ten (a linear number), made by joining ten single units together
  • 1 square of 100 beads – represents one hundred (a square number: 10 × 10 = 100 or 10²)
  • 1 cube of 1000 beads – represents one thousand (a cube number: 10 × 10 × 10 = 1000 or 10³)

This material is made of individual nylon beads, connected with wire, and organized in a beech wood tray.

It provides children with a multi-sensory experience of the decimal system. The quantity is not only seen and touched, but also felt through the differences in size, shape, and weight between the unit, the bar, the square, and the cube. By working with units, tens, hundreds, and thousands, children build a solid foundation for place value, number relationships, and mathematical operations.
