MATHEMATICS

MATHEMATICS

Maria Montessori believed that Mathematics should be considered as a special kind of language. It is very clear and concise that way of communicating with others in a particular area.
Dr. Montessori stated that man is born with a “Mathematical Mind.” She took the term from Pascal, the French philosopher and mathematician, who said that “man’s mind through certain tendencies and sensitive periods as well as through the fact that the young child needs to understand his/her environment in a logical manner. In order for humankind to develop and progress he/she must acquire the ability to discriminate in all areas.
Maria Montessori approached the introduction of mathematics in the same way as the other materials which she introduced to the children. She selected an abstraction i.e., number and turned it into something concrete, a “material abstraction “e.g., the Number Rods which the child worked with until he/she had grasped the concept and was able to use it.

Montessori Numbers/Numerals and Counters

A wooden box with lid containing 55 red wooden counters and red wooden cut-out numerals from 1 to 10.

This Montessori material helps children learn to count from 1 to 10, match quantities to symbols, and get introduced to even and odd numbers — laying the foundation for future work with division.

Presentation:

The teacher invites the child to lay out the numerals from 1 to 10. Under each numeral, the child places the corresponding number of red counters in a clear pattern.

Even numbers form two equal columns, while odd numbers have one counter placed in the center below the columns.

This visual arrangement naturally highlights the concept of even and odd numbers.

Power of 3 Cube

The Power of 3 Cube consists of a dissected cube in 13 pieces painted yellow, green and white.

Demonstrates the power of 3 by progressively tripling the previous piece, starting with a two centimeter cube. That cube is then triples with two similar cubes. Those three cubes are then tripled with two 6 x 2 x 2 centimeter prisms, eventually creating an 18 centimeter cube.

The wooden tray is included.

Arithmetic Trinomial Cube

Arithmetic Trinomial Cube (Montessori)

The Montessori Arithmetic Trinomial Cube gives a concrete, hands-on representation of the algebraic identity (a + b + c)3. Unlike the standard Trinomial Cube used in Primary, this Elementary version is color-coded to show the place-value hierarchy from 1 unit to 1 million, helping children connect cubes and prisms with numerical value.

Elementary Negative Snake Game

Elementary Negative Snake Game

The Elementary Negative Snake Game is an advanced Montessori mathematics material that helps children develop a concrete understanding of positive and negative numbers. By arranging and counting colored bead bars, students learn how numbers combine, transform, and balance along the number line.

This material is introduced in the Lower Elementary classroom (ages 6–9), guiding children from concrete operations toward abstract mathematical thinking. With colored beads, black and white bead bars, and number tiles, students practice addition and subtraction involving both positive and negative integers.
